Google Assistant, once considered a crown jewel of Google, is still alive and kicking, despite rumors of its imminent demise. Its future has seemed uncertain recently, especially given the rapid advancement of technology and competition from other voice assistants. However, ahead of the upcoming "Made by Google 2024" event, the company has confirmed that Google Assistant will remain a part of the Home/Nest ecosystem, though its fate on Android remains uncertain.
During the pandemic, the demand for assistants like Google Assistant and Alexa surged as people spent more time at home. However, in the post-pandemic period, interest in these technologies has waned. Contrary to the popular belief that the era of the smart home has ended, many users still rely on smart devices such as surveillance cameras and thermostats. However, the dream of a fully automated home with a single control center has yet to materialize. The high cost of these devices and the incompatibility between different ecosystems remain significant barriers to the widespread adoption of smart homes.
Voice assistants have also faced their own challenges. Samsung Bixby and Microsoft Cortana have already faded into obscurity, and Apple's Siri is losing its appeal. In the face of the rise of generative AI platforms like ChatGPT, traditional assistants are starting to feel outdated.
Earlier this year, Google offered beta users the option to make its new generative AI platform, Gemini, the default assistant on Pixel devices. While Gemini isn't yet ready to completely replace Google Assistant, it already shows promise. For example, it can facilitate more natural conversations rather than just responding to isolated queries. These new capabilities will be available to Nest Aware subscribers later this year as part of a public preview.
It’s unclear what specific role Gemini will play in the evolution of Google Assistant, but it’s evident that its integration will enhance natural language processing and expand the assistant’s functionality. Google may decide to rebrand and rename Assistant to Gemini, as Apple recently did with its updated Siri. Regardless, the future of Google Assistant is currently tied to smart homes, and we’ll have to wait and see how Google continues to develop this technology.
