What are backlinks?

Backlinks (also known as "inbound links", "inbound links" or "one-way links") are links from one website to a page on another website. Google and other major search engines consider backlinks to be "votes" for a particular page. Pages with a high number of backlinks tend to have high search engine rankings.

Why are backlinks important?

Backlinks are basically votes from other websites. Each of these voices says to search engines: "This content is valuable, trustworthy and useful".

So, the more of these "votes" you have, the higher your site will rank on Google and other search engines.

The use of links in the search engine algorithm is nothing new. In fact, backlinks were the basis of Google's original algorithm (known as "PageRank").

PageRank citations

Although Google has made thousands of changes to its algorithm since then, backlinks remain a key ranking signal.

Google has confirmed that backlinks remain one of the three most important search engine ranking factors.

Backlinks what are

What types of backlinks are valuable?

Not all backlinks are the same. In other words, if you want to rank higher in search engine rankings, focus on quality backlinks.

One quality backlink can be more powerful than 1,000 low-quality backlinks. As it turns out, quality backlinks tend to share the same key traits.

#1: they come from trustworthy and authoritative websites

Would you rather get a backlink from Harvard .... or from a random guy's website? Turns out Google feels the same way.

This concept is known as "Domain Authority." Basically, the more authority a site has, the more authority it can pass on to your site (via a link).

#2: They include your target keyword in the anchor text of the link.

As a reminder, anchor text is the visible text part of the link. What are anchor links?

Basically, you want your links to have anchor text that includes your target keyword.

In fact, a recent industry study found a correlation between keyword-rich anchor text and higher rankings for that keyword.

Now a little warning:

You don't want to overdo it with keyword-rich anchor text. In fact, Google's algorithm has a filter called Google Penguin.

Google Penguin filters out websites that use black hat link building strategies. And it specifically targets sites that build backlinks with exact match anchor text.

No. 3: The site (and page) that your links are linking to is thematically related to your site

When a website links to another website, Google wants to see that the two sites are related. If you think about it, this makes sense:

Imagine you just published an article about running a marathon.

In this case, Google would pay WAY more attention to links from sites about marathons, running, and fitness compared to sites about fishing, unicycles, and digital marketing.

Trait #4: A link is a "dofollow" link

Google and other search engines ignore links with a nofollow tag attached to them. In other words, nofollow links don't factor into search engine ranking algorithms.

Fortunately, the vast majority of links on the web are dofollow links.

And most links with a nofollow tag are not that valuable. For example, links from these sources tend to be nofollow:

Blog Comments

Press Releases

Paid Adverts

Either way, these links aren't very useful for SEO, so there's nothing wrong with them being nofollow.

Create linkable assets

If you want people to link to your site, you need something on your site that is worth linking to.

A linkable asset can be a blog post, a video, software, a quiz, a survey ... basically anything that people will want to link to.

In most cases, your linkable asset will be a great piece of content (which is why search engine optimisation and content marketing are so closely related).

How to get Google backlinks: how to make Google love you

If you're into SEO, chances are you like a real challenge.

You might enjoy the details of technical SEO - it makes the gears in your brain spin.

You might enjoy analysing the number of dofollow or nofollow links you have.

You may spend months of planning and scheduling to prepare your trickiest link building campaign.

But sometimes the best backlinks are the simplest. Still, they're easy to overlook.
For example, Google backlinks are some of the easiest links to get, and not every search engine optimiser has thought about learning this area while building links.

That's why you need to know how to get Google backlinks. Take a look at Google's online resources, for example.

How many online services does Google offer besides the leading search engine?

If you want to get Google backlinks, you need to understand what links are available and then how to get them.

In an expert analysis of SEO ranking factors, links from Google resources help raise your rankings. When you stop to think about it, it makes complete sense.

After all, Google has put serious resources into building or acquiring these websites, so why wouldn't they consider them in their rankings?

YouTube

YouTube, with its huge library of content, is an important search engine in its own right. If you or your clients are particularly adept at video, creating a YouTube channel may be a smart move.

Initially creating one or two simple videos with backlinks to your website will help you get started.

Google Maps

How do local businesses affect how they appear on the Google Maps search page? The answer is to spend time creating a free business listing on Google.

If you're doing search engine optimisation for a local business or a company with retail outlets, this type of Google backlink is especially important.

Google News

If you learn the art of news pumping, meaning you bring your business up to date with the latest news trends, you can get Google News backlinks. If you already have a PR campaign underway, keep Google News in mind.

Blogger

The links Google received in 2003 from blog posts can help with rankings. As with other links, aim for high quality links that will help users.

Google Sites

It may be worth thinking about how Google uses wikis and web page building, so it's worth considering creating a few pages about your niche on these websites.

As Google continues to expand and launch new products, this list may change. I expect the Google products listed above are here to stay, and they all have SEO value.
