Let's talk about meta tags

Meta tags are the backbone of SEO, and the first thing you need to set up when creating a web page. Without meta tags, you won't be able to reach your readers in the usual way. It doesn't take much time to create meta tags, but it's more important than you think. That's because 93% of the entire online experience starts with a search engine.

Meta keywords are a special type of meta tag that appears in the HTML code of a web page and helps search engines determine the topic of the page. Meta keywords are different from regular keywords because they appear "behind the scenes" in the source code of your page, rather than on the live, visible page itself.

The most important thing to remember when choosing or optimising meta keywords is to make sure that each keyword accurately reflects the content of your pages. If your site sells kitchen appliances, it's not good for attracting traffic with keywords like "Low Rate Mortgage" and "Find a Divorce Lawyer." One thing we know for sure about searchers is that they tend to pay for the services they're looking for, but they don't care at all about irrelevant results. "Spatula" and "Casserole" may not show up at first glance, but customers who search for those exact items on Google are much more likely to click through to your site.

There's no getting around the fact that meta keywords are no longer as important as they once were in SEO. Most search engines have realised that sites can easily 'beat' the meta keyword field with black keyword stuffing, so meta keywords are no longer an important part of Google's ranking algorithm. (More attention should be paid to title tags and meta descriptions than meta keywords.) But they can nevertheless play a small but useful role in communicating your message and attracting searchers to your site. In the competitive world of search engine marketing, every little bit helps.

Why should I use meta keywords?

Meta keywords have been devalued by Google because they have been abused by website owners and marketers. Developers "stuff" code with large amounts of keywords and phrases so that low-quality pages rank for these search terms, significantly reducing the accuracy and value of search results.

However, it remains unclear whether keywords have been completely removed from Google's algorithm. Search engine ranking algorithms are kept top secret so that people don't game the system, which explains why none of them have explicitly announced how thoroughly they check meta keywords. In fact, there is evidence that Bing and other search engines may continue to rely on them, and of course, even if you are actively running paid campaigns on these engines, you still want your website to show up in the regular results.

Chances are, your competitors are already using them. Not to mention, building a list of keywords, while time-consuming, can be invaluable in helping you focus your website content directly on those potential customers who may be searching for you.

Incorporating meta keywords into your content

Whether you create and organise your meta keywords manually or through software, the most important thing to be sure of is that the keywords you choose are relevant to the page in question.

Another common question is: how many meta keywords should I use? As a rule of thumb, don't use more than 10 meta keywords for a single page.

Beyond the obvious important questions of quantity and relevance, keep in mind when choosing keywords:

Common spelling errors: the best way including spelling errors in your meta tags can indicate to search engines that your page is relevant to the search query (with errors), without having to include spelling errors in your web page copy.

Long-tail keywords. Keep in mind both variants of keywords and plurals, as well as more broad and specific phrases known as long tail keywords.

Real searches: real search queries that used to bring users to your page can be your best friend when creating meta keyword lists. Check your analytics or log files to find these keywords, and use keyword hinting tools to back up your data. What words do people commonly use when describing your business? And what words do your competitors use?

What are meta tags and why are they important?

Meta tags have been one of the main elements of SEO. It is necessary for every SEO specialist to know this. Are meta tags a factor in Google page ranking? Is it important? How does it affect your website's SEO?
Meta tags have played a big role in the history of search engines. They used to be valued as a factor in ranking - until people started abusing their use to reach the top of search results. After that, Google removed meta tags from ranking factors. But that doesn't mean they're no longer important. Meta tags still play a pretty big role in the search engine optimisation of your website.

Meta tags are words that are hidden in your code. People browsing your site simply won't be able to see them. They are, as Danny Sullivan puts it, a "legal" way for search engines to hide the words on your web pages. Search engines still read them to have a simple and generalised idea of what your site is about and what exactly your keywords are.

Meta tags are located inside the HTML header area. You should learn about these tags by having a good understanding of HTML tags.

<head> This is where the </head> meta tags are located

You can use three important parts of meta tags:

Title - The title tag is the title text that appears in search engine listings. I know it's not necessarily a meta tag, but it works similarly.

<title> The title text is here </title>

Description - The description meta tag is where you want to put the summary of your site. This is where you place the essence of your site and what you offer to people. It shouldn't be too long because search engines only read a certain number of words.

<meta name = "description" content = "This is where you put the summary of your site" />

Keywords - The keywords meta tag is where you put all the keywords you use on your site. This is basically where you want the words to be at the top of the search results page. Your keywords are important - even if you remove all the other words, the user needs to know what your site is about when they read your keywords.

<meta name = "keywords" content = "SEO, hacker, Google, search, etc." />

These three things make up your meta tags.

The importance of meta tags is that search engines read them to compare whether those keywords and description are related to the visible content. Are your keywords present on your web page? Is your meta description related to your content and your site's niche? Your meta tags carry some weight that search engines see, so wouldn't you want to do everything you can to raise your page higher in the search engine rankings? That's why meta tags are important.

Saving tips: even if meta tags don't matter much when it comes to page ranking, their importance is still present because search engine robots confirm their relevance to your content and site niche.
