How to define your market segment in GOOGLE

What is the target market?

A target market is the group of customers for whom your product or service is intended. First of all, the target market is determined by the industry.

For example, if you developed software for remote operation of construction company headquarters, you will most likely focus on players in the construction industry. After all, they are the ones you created the product for.

Now that you've defined the industry, it's time to set the scope. Even within the same industry there are both very large companies and very small ones. Fortune 500 companies can make a big difference to your business, but it will take much longer than usual to secure a contract with them—sometimes a year or more.

Small companies - less than 100 employees - move much faster because they do not have a large bureaucratic approval and signature process. But the downside is that they don’t have that much free resources to invest in your product.

How to determine your target market:

Analyze your product or service;

Study your competitors;

Define selection criteria;

Do your analysis.

  1. Analyze your product or service

If you are an entrepreneur and have created a product yourself, most likely you have an idea of who you need to sell it to. But if you're a sales executive or a salesperson, you need to stop, take a hard look at what you're selling, and understand who could benefit from what you're offering. The questions below will help you speed up your brainstorming:

What needs does your product or service satisfy?

What problems does it solve? What difficulties does it avoid?

Who will benefit most from your product or service?

  1. Research your competitor

Conduct a competitor analysis to understand how they position their product - who they sell to. Look at their customer base: are there any untapped market segments that your offering could fill?

  1. Select the criteria by which segmentation will take place

The target market can be segmented in several different ways. Customers can be divided according to demographic, geographic and behavioral characteristics.

Here are some basic ways to divide your target customers

Age

Floor

Income level

Location

Behavior

Life style

Values

Interests

  1. Conduct an analysis

Now that you have a little better understanding of your customers, it's time to deepen your knowledge. What marketing strategy should you choose to reach your target market? Did we get a large enough base of potential clients at the output: is the number of targeted contacts suitable to keep our product or service afloat? Market research will help you understand your target segment better.

Once you establish your target market, you will gain a better understanding of your business. Do you want to be a fast-growing startup or would you rather be a stable production company with a steady flow of customers?
